The Mountain Institute Logo

35. The Mountain Institute
The Mountain Institute focuses its work in very specific areas--mountain areas--including the highest, longest and oldest mountain ranges on the planet. We believe that places shape our lives. Our work is with mountain people, people whose knowledge, respect and love of their places makes them truly native to their environments. It is their wisdom we work to share. The Mountain Institute is truly international in scale, linking mountain areas through Global Initiatives and providing active field programs in mountain ranges on three continents--the Andes of South America, the Himalaya of Asia, and the Appalachians of North America. The programs of the Institute vary like the cultures and environments we encounter, but our mountain focus--a focus on people, on place, and on purpose--remains constant.
